Herbie Hancock & UNESCO Recognize Doc Jones’ Leadership in Arizona
In 2012, during the inaugural year of International Jazz Day, Doc Jones met legendary jazz pianist Herbie Hancock in New Orleans, where the global movement to unite the world through jazz was just beginning.
Since that moment, Doc Jones—Founder and Executive Director of the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation—has worked tirelessly to unite the state of Arizona around this global celebration, building bridges across communities, cultures, and generations through the power of jazz.
His efforts have earned recognition from UNESCO and Herbie Hancock, who commend his long-standing commitment to:
- Promoting April 30th as International Jazz Day throughout Arizona
- Expanding access to jazz education and youth engagement
- Positioning Arizona as a global destination for jazz tourism and culture
As we prepare for the 15th Annual International Jazz Day Celebration, Doc’s vision is stronger than ever—with a statewide Mayor’s Coalition, strategic sponsors like Yrēfy, and a growing international exchange movement that will uplift Arizona on the world stage.
